Review summary
An 8X ED-Nikkor zoom lens distinguishes Nikon's Coolpix 8700 from the rest of the 8-megapixel competition but not much else. It shoots great pictures with loads of detail, and it offers enthusiasts a solid feature set, but those same photographers will probably grumble about its lackluster performance and some aspects of its design. Like nearly all the megazoom digital cameras we've reviewed, the Coolpix 8700 sports a chunky faux-SLR design. Nikon doesn't make this look work any better than anyone else does. But the camera is surprisingly compact, and it weighs 1 pound, 3 ounces with battery and media installed--fairly light for this class. In addition, the fit and finish of its sturdy black magnesium-alloy body looks and feels top-notch, and it's easy to get a comfortable, secure hold on it, thanks to its rubberized grip.

/sc/30690093-2-200-DT1.gif' width='200' height='150' border='0' alt=' /> Though we appreciate Nikon's attempt to save space by putting many of the buttons on the left side of the camera's lens barrel, they're too hard to tell apart by feel and too easy to press accidentally. |
Typical of our experience with many of Nikon's enthusiast cameras, the operating logic of some features is difficult to figure out without the manual. But once we learned them, we found operation quite efficient. We also like the Coolpix 8700's menu system; it's adequately labeled and reasonably easy to navigate. Though the Coolpix 8700 isn't quite the megazoom champion of the 8-megapixel set--the current title probably belongs to the Konica Minolta Dimage A2--advanced photographers will find almost nothing lacking from this camera's feature set. Its impressive 8X Nikkor zoom lens, which includes ED (extralow dispersion) glass elements, covers a range from 35mm to 280mm (the 35mm equivalent), and it opens to a maximum aperture of f/2.8 to f/4.2. We favor the 28mm-to-200mm range of some other megazooms, but Nikon's optional supplemental wide-angle and telephoto converters can expand this camera's range from 28mm to 420mm. There's even a fish-eye converter with a 7mm-equivalent focal length.
The Coolpix 8700 stores photos on CompactFlash cards, and you can capture images in JPEG, TIFF, or RAW (NEF) file formats. JPEGs can be recorded at three compression levels and eight resolutions. The included Nikon View 6.2 software installs a Photoshop plug-in for converting RAW files, but the plug-in offers rudimentary adjustments; for an extra $99, you can get Nikon Capture for true NEF editing.

As for exposure options, the Coolpix 8700 offers 12 scene modes to complement the standard options of programmed auto, aperture-priority, shutter-priority, and manual modes. Though there is a good metering display in manual exposure mode, Nikon made the knuckleheaded decision to enable the live exposure histogram in only the three autoexposure modes. There are four metering modes: matrix, center-weighted, spot, and spot AF area (links spot metering to the active autofocus patch). Exposure compensation to plus or minus 2EV is easily accessible, and you can also use three- or five-frame autoexposure bracketing.
The camera also provides a standard hotshoe for external flashes and can perform TTL exposure control with compatible Nikon Speedlite units.
/sc/30690093-2-200-BATT.gif' width='200' height='150' border='0' alt=' /> Using flash about half the time, we managed 300 shots from a single charge of the Coolpix 8700's relatively low-powered 680mAh EN-EL1 lithium-ion battery. That's acceptable but not stellar. |
The camera's lens zooms relatively quickly and precisely. Autofocus is fast and decisive in good light, but it's slow in low light, where it causes unacceptable shutter delays of up to 2 seconds. In manual focus mode, you use the main command dial to set focus distance, which works fine.
For this class, the electronic viewfinder (EVF) is fairly standard: it's adequately sharp and usable in good light but generally not very comfortable to use. The 1.8-inch LCD flips out and rotates--a very handy feature--and it offers a reasonably sharp image. It also works well outdoors. Both the EVF and the LCD show about 97 percent of the actual image.
The built-in flash's maximum range is 13.5 feet with auto ISO or 9.5 feet at ISO 100-- nothing special. But the flash shots from our sidelit test scene looked extremely well exposed, with fewer hot spots than we usually see. The Coolpix 8700 produces very good images with generous detail--visibly more than the 4- and 5-megapixel models that previously set the resolution benchmark for consumer digital cameras. Even so, the 8700's photo quality isn't at the head of its class.

You can crop in very close (right) without losing any detail from the original. |
The camera's lens maintains sharpness over most of the field of view, with only a little bit of falloff in the corners. In addition, the Coolpix 8700 displays excellent white balance, broad dynamic range, and accurate color reproduction. As is typical of Nikon's cameras, the Coolpix 8700 shows a modest tendency toward underexposure. While underexposing images can improve detail retention in the highlights, the darker photos are less direct-to-print-friendly.

Competitors do a better job of capturing detail; you can tell that this is a grosgrain ribbon only by looking at the shadowed area. |

The Coolpix 8700's images exhibited more purple fringing than we like to see but not enough to be a serious problem. |
With respect to noise, the Coolpix 8700 manages very well at light-sensitivity settings of ISO 50 and 100. At ISO 200, noise becomes more visible onscreen and in prints, but it's still moderate compared to that of many of its competitors. Once you hit ISO 400, the noise becomes quite obvious.
We noticed that the 8700 produced modest purple fringing in shots with dark foreground objects against bright backgrounds, and our test shots showed moderate green and magenta chromatic aberration at the edges of the frame, which was exacerbated by the decrease in focal sharpness for those areas. Still, neither was enough to be a deal breaker.
Nikon moves into 8 megapixel territory with a long zoom, and a new body, but the same legendary Nikon feature set! <<Shutter Lag & Cycle Time Tests :(Previous) | (Next): Camera Modes & Menus>> Page 8:Operation & User InterfaceReview First Posted: 03/22/2004 |
I found the Coolpix 8700's user interface to be a little difficult to graspat first. By default it's locked into Program mode only, and it's not atall obvious that you have to switch to one of the custom settings to do somethingsimple like cancel the auto flash. The LCD menu system is available for novices, and for less commonly used controls, and it's good that it's there. Overtime, experienced users will find they can make virtually all of the necessaryadjustments for routine shooting without resorting to the LCD screen, providedthey are in one of the two custom modes. Once you learn where the functionsare, you can do most of what you need using the external controls on thecamera. I have found the interface for switching resolution and compressionmodes to be a little slow on the uptake, often taking seconds to registermy desire to make a choice. After clicking the dial several times, it zipsthrough settings to catch up, taking me far from what I intended. This doesn'thappen every time, but often enough to be worth mentioning.

The inclusion of a programmable Function key adds flexibility, letting youcustomize the camera to your specific shooting needs by assigning frequently-usedsettings to the top-panel Function button. Exposure compensation, exposuremode, ISO value, image quality and size, as well as focus controls (manualfocus setting, macro, and infinity focus) and flash mode can all be adjustedwithout the LCD. The top-panel monochrome status display provides clear feedbackfor all these settings as well. When you do have to delve into the LCD menusystem, navigation via the Four-Way arrow rocker button is intuitive andquick. In Record mode, the menu system is split into three pages of options, with a tabbed interface, by which you can jump between pages with only afew clicks of the rocker button (rather than scrolling through every optionon each screen). In normal operation, most of the camera's functions arecontrolled by a combination of hitting a button and turning the Command dial, which usually makes it fast and efficient to change settings. Control layoutis also logical, allowing one-handed operation for commonly changed functions, requiring a two-handed approach only for manual focus setting, ISO, flashmode, and size/quality adjustment. These buttons would be better on the backof the unit, but there's no room there; once the user is accustomed to theirpresence on the lens body, it should be easy to use.
Reading the manual is essential to understanding many of the functions of theCoolpix 8700. Its feature set is rich and deep, and the reward for the extraresearch is a thorough understanding of a very capable camera.
Control Enumeration
Shutter Button: Located on top of the camera (slightly sloping down infront) and encircled by the Power switch, this button sets focus and exposurewhen halfway pressed and fires the shutter when fully pressed.
Power Switch: Surrounding the Shutter button on the camera's top panel, this dial turns the camera on or off.
Mode Button: Just behind the Power switch on the top panel, this buttonselects the exposure mode (Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority,or Manual) when held down while turning the Command dial. In Manual exposuremode (meaning manual control over both aperture and shutter speed settings),a quick press of this button alternates between the aperture or shutter speedsettings, letting you change either by turning the Command dial. A secondpress selects the other exposure parameter for Command dial control.
Exposure Compensation/Voice Memo Button: Directly to the right of theMode button, this button adjusts the amount of exposure compensation (from-2 to +2 exposure equivalents (EV) in one-third step increments) when helddown while turning the Command dial. When in full-frame Playback mode, voicememos can be added to photos up to 20 seconds long. Hold the button downwhile recording. A music note icon appears onscreen when a voice memo isattached to a photo, and pressing the Voice Memo button plays the note. Thezoom controls change the volume up and down.
Function Button: Just behind the Exposure Compensation button, this buttonswitches between any of four preprogrammed camera setups. You can set upthe camera for three completely different shooting scenarios (or leave itin 'auto' mode), and then switch quickly between them by pressingthis button and rotating the Command dial. Menu items programmable via theuser setups include white balance, metering pattern, continuous-shootingmodes, Best Shot Selector, image adjustment (brightness/contrast), colorsaturation control, and adapter lens setting. Also memorized within eachuser mode are non-menu items such as exposure mode settings, flash mode settings, and exposure compensation adjustments. NOTE: As I mentioned earlier, noneof the advanced features of the 8700 are available until you take the cameraout of Auto mode via this button (or the menu system). The functioncontrolled by the Func. button can be changed by a LCD menu option, to includeuser mode, focus setting, flash mode, white balance, or metering pattern.
Illuminate Button: To the left of the Function button, this button activatesa green backlight behind the status display panel, so you can read the displayin dark conditions.
Command Dial: Located at the rear, righthand corner of the top of thecamera, this rotary control is used in conjunction with many of the otherbuttons on the camera to change camera settings. Pressing the appropriatebutton and rotating the dial one way or the other steps through the optionsavailable for the setting in question. In programmed exposure mode, rotatingthe dial at any time (e.g., with no button pressed) varies the exposure program, biasing it toward larger or smaller aperture settings. (A very handy wayto control depth of field in your photos, without having to bother with theaperture priority exposure mode.)
Diopter Adjustment Dial: Hidden on the left side of the viewfinder eyepiece, this small, black dial adjusts the viewfinder to accommodate eyeglass wearers.
Monitor Select Button: On the right side of the viewfinder eyepiece, this button toggles the viewfinder display back and forth between the EVFand LCD monitor. Since there's no optical viewfinder, there's no 'off'setting to disable the electronic viewfinders entirely.
Zoom Control: Located in the upper right corner of the back panel, thisrocker control operates the optical zoom in all capture modes. Likewise, when digital telephoto is enabled, this button controls the amount of digitalzoom (from 1.1x to 4.0x).
In single-image playback mode, pressing the 'T' button repeatedlyzooms in on the image, while pressing the 'W' side of the controlcancels zoomed playback. Pressing the 'W' side again switches tofour-image thumbnail view, and another press switches to nine-image thumbnailview. Pressing the 'T' side of the control steps back through thesequence in the other direction. These buttons also control volume in VoiceMemo playback mode.
Menu Button: Adjacent to the top right corner of the LCD monitor, thisbutton brings up the settings menu in all capture modes as well as in Playbackmode. Pressing it a second time cancels the menu display.
Quick Review Button: Beneath the Menu button, this button calls up athumbnail sized display of the most recently captured image while in eitherrecord mode, appearing in the upper left-hand corner. The left and rightarrow keys scroll through the remaining captured images on the memory card.Pressed a second time, it expands the thumbnail view to a full-screen displayof the captured images on the card, complete with an image information overlay. The Quick Review mode is canceled by pressing the button a third time, orby pressing the Shutter button.
